Stay safe with Wi-Fi security best practices

Wi-Fi is all around us. It’s something we don’t really think about, but use constantly, especially when traveling. Bobcats can find themselves using it in airports, cafes, or hotels when not on campus.

An unsecured network is an open wifi network found at places like those mentioned above. They do not encrypt your data meaning that other computers or individuals can see your private information while using them. While away from campus and connecting to an unsecured network follow these tips:

At public hotspots

  • Make sure the safety features of your laptop are turned on
  • Check that the firewall of your system is running and file sharing service is disabled
  • Never transmit confidential or sensitive data through a public Wi-Fi network
  • Turn off wireless network when not in use

At the airport

  • Free Wi-Fi connections available at airports are generally not secure
  • Avoid accessing or transmitting sensitive information in a public area where it can be viewed by others around you (shoulder surfing)

The difference between a secure and unsecure network is protection. Since your private information can be seen by others it is highly advised to not enter bank information or sensitive personal data on an unsecured network. Think of it as leaving your home or vehicle unlocked, meaning your belongings are subject to potential theft.

For those on campus, Texas State’s wireless network includes four different options.

TXST-Bobcats is a secure and fast option for students or individuals with an active NetID and password.

TXST-Visitor is an unsecured, open network for visitors. Visitors will be sent a passcode via text message that will grant them access for 24 hours.

TXST-Home is secure and available in Residence Halls. Residents can log in through Texas State Connect.

Bobcat Stadium is an unsecured, open network available at the stadium for anyone attending games.

Texas State also participates in the eduroam network. It is a secure high-speed wireless network that can be accessed in 12,000 academic and research institutions worldwide. Bobcats can access participating university campuses’ secure networks with their TXST credentials.

Making your home connection secure (for those Bobcats living off-campus)

  • Change the router’s default password (the exact steps differ by router model)
  • Use the WPA/WPA2, it’s the strongest available encryption
  • Use anti-virus, anti-spyware, and a firewall

Stay safe Bobcats!
