Applying for jobs is as complicated as ever, one application in one tab, another in a different web browser. Wait, what am I applying for again? Unfortunately, I’ve learned the hard way when it comes to building resumes, which makes me the perfect person to tell you about my experience. Grab a seat and take some notes and learn more about this essential technology to make your job search successful.
My mistake
When applying for my current job as Creative Copywriter here at Texas State University, I thought my resume was impeccable. However, during the interview I mentioned the many journalism courses and other opportunities I had under my belt and my now supervisor was shocked! I didn’t include any of my journalism and technical writing coursework, along with other writing experiences I had because I thought you only included your work background in a resume. I’m so lucky to be here and now I get to share this information with you, so you don’t make the same mistake.
Resume crafting
Did you know as a Texas State student, you have access to amazing essential tech like LinkedIn Learning’s numerous courses on resume building to help you succeed? It’s important to show off all your achievements and personal strengths, but why stop there? When learning how to build your resume, LinkedIn Learning has courses to help you create a personalized resume and tailor it to whatever job you’re applying. The courses also guide you through your sore spots like lack of experience for example. Among the many helpful courses, Tailoring your approach is by far my favorite when customizing my unique resume. LinkedIn Learning not only gives you a step-by-step walk-through, but they provide relevant question and answer sections, so you get all your needs met with people who have been around the block. If you want to create your perfect resume, you can visit another one of my favorite courses, Writing a successful resume.
Cover letter
Now here comes the really fun part! You’ve got all your credentials and experience typed out, now it’s time to show employers why you’re perfect for the job. This is exactly what a cover letter does for you. Creating a phenomenal cover letter is more than just your credentials, it’s about telling your interviewer why your experience is vital for the role at hand, and why you’re the one to beat. Another favorite walk-through on building a killer cover letter has over 200,000 views and can be found in the LinkedIn Learning Writing a cover letter course.
Please, take it from someone who learned the value of showcasing my skills the hard way! Here at Texas State, we have every resource we could possibly need to get that job we’ve worked so hard for. You’re amazing, and now it’s time to show it off.
