Get to know your Wi-Fi

The Division of Information Technology provides indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi at both university campuses. In this post, we will tell you more about all the available connections and how to choose the best one for you.

Available networks

Here is a listing of available Wi-Fi networks you may see on campus:

TXST-Bobcats

Secure and fast Wi-Fi for anyone with an active NetID and password. This includes faculty, staff, students, guests with an active NetID, and retirees. If you have a Texas State NetID, this is how you should connect to Wi-Fi on campus.

TXST-Visitor

Unsecure connection with limited internet access for guests who do not have a NetID. Passcode is sent via text message. Connections expire after 24 hours. Anyone without a NetID can use this network, but access may be rate-limited. Also, access is restricted to web browsing. Students, faculty, and staff should use TXST-Bobcats for full internet access.

Note: Do not conduct sensitive or confidential business on this network.

TXST-Home

Secure and fast Wi-Fi for student use in residence halls. Residents log in to Texas State Connect and obtain a passcode to connect personal, gaming, and media devices.

eduroam

Secure and fast Wi-Fi for students, faculty, and staff from other participating higher-education institutions. This network is equivalent to TXST-Bobcats but allows visitors to log in using credentials from their institutions instead of a Texas State NetID.

Note: Since Texas State University participates in eduroam, TXST State students, faculty, and staff visiting other eduroam-participating institutions can connect to Wi-Fi on those campuses. Select the “eduroam” network from the Wi-Fi list on your device, and log in using “your_netid@txstate.edu” as the username. Users can also download the geteduroam app.

Texas State Connect

Student residents can connect their personal, gaming, and media devices in their residence halls using the TXST-Home network. TXST-Home is the Wi-Fi network used to connect devices that only accept a password to connect. Visit Texas State Connect to get started.

TXST-Restricted is also accessible through Texas State Connect. It is available to individuals and groups working on sponsored projects at the university.

Mobile hotspots

Many Bobcats use their mobile device’s hotspot capability, but with all these connection options, there is no need. In fact, mobile hotspots can interfere with TXST Wi-Fi, making the experience slower and less reliable for the mobile hotspot user and the TXST Wi-Fi users in the area. Please turn off your mobile hotspot while on campus to avoid causing interference for other Wi-Fi users.

Take advantage of all the available connections TXST has to offer! For more information about Wi-Fi at the university, visit the IT Assistance Center’s Wireless (Wi-Fi) Network support page.
