Navigating Canvas: Tips for student success

The Canvas learning management system is an important part of your academic journey at Texas State University. Encountering glitches, especially when submitting an exam or assignment, can be stressful and frustrating. Fortunately, many Canvas issues can be avoided through device and browser settings. With a little advance preparation, you can sidestep most common Canvas errors entirely.

Adjust your device settings

Your electronic device’s settings affect how well Canvas functions. Whether you’re working on a mobile device, laptop, or desktop, three simple steps will improve your Canvas experience:

  1. Connect to TXST-Bobcats Wi-Fi: Other Wi-Fi networks, like TXST-Guest, do not support Canvas.
  2. Turn off your mobile hotspot: Your personal device hotspot may interfere with Canvas.
  3. Limit or disable Bluetooth devices: Unnecessary Bluetooth connections can cause service disruptions.

Visit the IT Assistance Center’s (ITAC) reference, “Preventing Device Issues” for more information.

Choose the right browser

Selecting the correct internet browser is just as important as adjusting your device settings. Use these four tips to make sure your browser is optimized for Canvas:

  1. Use Chrome or Edge: These browsers provide the best Canvas experience. If using Firefox as your browser, ensure it’s not the Firefox Extended Release (ESR) version. University-owned computers offer Firefox ESR, which does not support Canvas use.
  2. Stay updated: Use the latest compatible browser version.
  3. Disable plugins and extensions: Some browser plugins and extensions disrupt Canvas.
  4. Check privacy settings: Certain browser privacy settings impact how Canvas operates. It’s important to note that Google Chrome uses your information to target advertisements based on your shared information. Learn how to manage your ad privacy settings in Chrome.
