Join forces with our dynamic Duo to keep your information safe

Who’s this Duo, anyway?

Whether you’re a student or a member of our faculty or staff, chances are you’ve met Duo. You may have asked yourself what Duo is and why we use it at the university.  You may even wonder whether that extra-extra step is truly necessary. Great questions! Read on for some short answers and helpful links.

So, how does Duo work?

Think of Duo as your friendly, neighborhood information superhero. Technically speaking, it’s a multi-factor authentication method needed for logging in to certain Texas State online services, like Canvas. Simply put, Duo uses two steps to safeguard your accounts and keep the university’s information secure. Duo increases your level of security by verifying something you already know – your Texas State NetID – in combination with something you physically have – a mobile device, landline, or key fob.

Well, I don’t have a mobile device.  Take that, Duo!

A true hero like Duo would never leave a citizen hanging! Read here for what to do when you don’t have access to a mobile device. In addition to the preferred Duo mobile app, Duo offers many authentication options, including a key fob token, security keys, text messages, and phone calls.

Come on, I’m careful. Is Duo really necessary?

Yes! This is a hero we all need! Think about it. Many of us have either fallen victim to a scam, phishing, or identity theft, or we know someone who has been victimized. As phishers and hackers become bolder and more skilled, it’s up to us to protect ourselves and our information. That’s where Duo comes in. To save the day, as it were.

Ok, ok, I’m in! How do I enroll in Duo?

Not all superheroes wear capes, and we can all be heroes when it comes to information security!
