President Kelly Damphousse visits the Teaching Space of Tomorrow

On October 6, the Division of Information Technology welcomed President Kelly Damphousse and Vice President for Finance and Support Services Eric Algoe for a tour of the Teaching Space of Tomorrow.

The Teaching Space of Tomorrow is an online teaching and learning initiative led by Ken Pierce, vice president for information technology, and supported by Associate Vice President for Technology Innovation Dr. Carlos Solís. A fully digitalized teaching studio and office, the space focuses on elevating the instructor’s teaching experience, thereby increasing student engagement in synchronous online learning.

The current Instructor-in-Residence, Dr. Lea Velez, LMSW, is an accomplished practitioner and senior clinical lecturer for Texas State’s School of Social Work. Reflecting on her first semester in the Teaching Space of Tomorrow, Velez says, “In my experience, the Teaching Space of Tomorrow has become more than a physical space. It has informed my view of how we use technology to connect rather than separate.” Velez hopes her residency will elevate the involvement of students, faculty, staff, and members of the broader community. She adds, “The opportunity to learn, grow, and help enrich the learning experience of our students and our community is an honor.”

Damphousse and Algoe experienced the Teaching Space of Tomorrow firsthand, as Velez conducted a lecture attended by 81 participants. After greeting the students, Damphousse looked on as Velez collaboratively explored foundational concepts of social work with class members.
